Looking Chic Has Never Been This Easy, A Scarf Tying Tutorial

    sweater and flower top—Zara; skirt—Banana Republic; retro sandals—Prada; scarf—gifted

There are few things in life you can buy that pretty much guarantees that extra level of panache and fabulousness just by draping it ever so casually across the neck or tied to perfection over your coiffed mane. I am of course speaking of the deviously simple scarf that is often relegated to an afterthought, something we throw on when the mercury dips or when our outfit is too simple and bland to be seen by the masses at your weekly shopping trip to that mecca of suburbia and all things consumerist—the mall. It is the rare occasion where the exact drape and placement of ones scarf is purely intentional.

Thankfully, the fashion industry has recently embraced the scarf as not only a mere accessory that is rarely featured in the glossies, but a key part of pulling your look together cohesively.

This season is all about the seventies and that boho hippie thing. In the past, hippie season translated into all out sloppy layers—most famously by the olson twins while attending NYU. This was achieved in part by scarves wrapped loosely around the neck to add to the whole I-just-threw-on-clothes-and-I-don’t-care look.

But this season, the seventies influences seem more sophisticated, more glamorous seventies starlet than woodstock love child, most clearly seen in Marc Jacobs Spring 2011 runway show. A glamour puss needs a scarf to match and so instead of throwing it around the neck, scarfnistas everywhere are tying the colored fabrics onto their heads in fabulously chic ways.

The downside? Head wraps aren’t easy to pull off. The risk? Looking dowdy and frumpy and possibly downright ridiculous. But if you do pull it off, the payoff is becoming the queen of chic. Just grab those oversize chanel sunnies and you’ll have the lowly bystanders wondering, “who is that??”

Here is a step-by-step guide to master one of the thousands of ways to look fabulously chic in a scarf—-the retro headband.

Start with a scarf that is narrow in width, but long in length. Also, make sure the scarf has a bold print in bold colors. Avoid small prints and pastel colors, which tend to look grandmotherly and decidedly dowdy.

Then hold the scarf by both ends and bring it to the back of your head, holding the middle of the scarf against the nape of your neck, as shown below:

Pull up the ends and twist around twice so it looks something like this:

Now bring the ends down while twisting to add texture like so

and tuck them at the nape of the neck.

Bobby pin at the bottom in an “x” shape to secure. Tuck in the rest of the scarf to make it look more like a uniform headband.

The finished product? purely chic :)
